Actors sought to be in stage version of classic sitcom Up Pompeii at the Norbury

A PLAY reading of Up Pompeii, based on characters created for the popular TV series, will take place at Droitwich’s Norbury Theatre ahead of the piece being staged in July.

The bawdy sitcom, with its innuendo and genius of Frankie Howerd, became a cult from the early 1970s and the script for the Norbury’s production brings out all the best elements.

The story is set in Ancient Rome and surrounds Lurcio – the slave of Senator Ludicrous Sextus. He delivers his traditional prologue and then proceedings begin which see him getting caught up in all the sexual liaisons in all quarters of his master’s house.

The action frequently brings the audience into play, particularly with the innuendo and double entendre.

Everyone is welcome to the reading, which promises to provide lots of laughs, and there will be auditions for people wanting to tread the boards in the production when it is staged from July 21 to 23 and between 28 and 30 at the Friar Street venue.

Those appearing need to be completely confident about coping with audience participation as well as acting alongside others.

Anyone interested can either e-mail director Ian Thompson on idthiggs@yahoo.com or turn up at the theatre on the night.
