THE HISTORY Boys by Alan Bennett, recently voted ‘the nation’s favourite play’ will be performed at Droitwich’s Norbury Theatre.
Performances of the show, which was premiered at the National Theatre in 2004 and has had a run in Broadway, will run between Thursday and Saturday, September 7 and 9, and from September 14 to 16.
The story is set in Sheffield in the 1980s and surrounds an unruly bunch of bright, funny, sixth form boys in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university.
There is also a maverick English teacher at odds with a young and shrewd supply teacher, a headmaster obsessed with results and a history teacher who thinks he is a fool.
With its many references to art and poetry, it provokes questions about history and how it should be taught, along with education and its purpose.
A spokesperson for the Norbury Theatre said: “It is brilliantly funny but, by the end, there are tears with the laughter.
“It is a must-see play, and an experience you will remember.”
As well as being named the nation’s favourite play, it also won the Evening Standard’s Best Play award, the Laurence Olivier accolade for Best New Play and the Tony award for Best Play.
It also launched the careers of a host of stars, including James Corden, Dominic Cooper, Jamie Parker, Samuel Barnett, Russell Tovey, Andrew Knott, Sacha Dhawan and Samuel Anderson.
