Hilarious Harriet Kemsley challenged cliches about women and relationships

THIS comedy show set out to undermine familiar clichés about women and sex and did so, with Harriet using her own experiences as examples.

The evening in the Artrix Studio began with support act Chloe Petts whose conversational, interactive comedy was clever and quick-witted.

Her set, and the involvement of the audience, achieved its aim – warming the crowd up nicely for Harriet’s ‘Slutty Joan’ which heavily relied upon audience participation.

With a successful stint at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival already in the bag, anticipation and expectation was high for the show.

And as Bromsgrove was one of the last stops on the tour, we had a slick and polished performance from Harriet. As promised, her jokes revolved around stories of her sexual mishaps which came across as incredibly brave.

Harriet also discussed important topics such as the #MeToo movement and its progressive influence aimed at reducing the double standards that befell women in society. It added a reflective quality to her performance but never became too heavy, despite the sensitive topics discussed. The intimate honesty created the impression Harriet was confessing her secrets one-on-one and her unfailing positivity surrounding the situations she found herself in ensured it never felt uncomfortable or overly personal.

By the end of the consistently confessional comedy, with its all-endearing self-deprecating charm, we were able to empathise with Harriet and left feeling like we had a friend-like connection with her.

The show culminated with Harriet stripping off her knickers (don’t worry – she had others on underneath) and throwing them at the audience.

Despite how it sounds, it appropriately rounded off what was a riotously hilarious evening of comedy.
