Superb Scrooge brings festive spirit to The Norbury

THE NORBURY Theatre’s version of Scrooge the Musical is the perfect pre-Christmas play to get you in the seasonal spirit.

The production is one of the most vocally powerful you will see, with faultless performances from the chorus, right through to the leads.

The music itself was simply breath-taking, both on the sombre numbers and on the flurry of festive foot-tappers, including December the 25th, The Minister’s Cat and Thank You Very Much.

The story centres around Ebeneezer Scrooge – the ultimate miser, who hates Christmas and everyone who celebrates it.

He is visited by three ghosts who show him his Christmas past and present and what the future has in store if he continues with his bah humbug ways.

And it was great to see a cast which featured actors of all ages, epitomising the show that guaranteed entertainment for all the family – no matter how old.

In truth, there are too many highlights to mention in this show, but the pick of them were the song Happiness, which boasted outstanding harmonies between Isabel, played by Penny Ashmore and young Scrooge (Harry Ryan).

The stunning performances across the board included David Fuller as Jacob Marley and Tom Weir as lovable chirpy Cockney Tom Jenkins.

Young Ella Sutton as the Ghost of Christmas Present and the booming Brian Blessed-esque Gordon Lush as the Ghost of Christmas Past were both excellent.

But the pick of the cast by far was Paul Robinson as Ebeneezer Scrooge. His short sharp shrift responses raised a few laughs from the audience, as did the sprinkling of one-liners.

But the funniest moments were the arrival of Jacob Marley at the head of Scrooge’s bed and the turkey scene towards the end.

And, as with all great musicals, the finale was everything a good finale should be.

As Scrooge frantically ran around the stage dishing out presents and trying to turn back the clock, the play became more festive and feelgood.

By the end, the crowd was clapping along with the songs and you could feel the buzz as they left the auditorium – many of them were still singing the catchiest of the tunes – Thank You Very Much.

And most of the people who caught this production will have been saying ‘Thank You Very Much’ to the cast, director, producer and everyone involved in this production for a wonderful night of festive entertainment.

If you’ve got an itch to see a seasonal play, you might just have to ‘Cratchit’ and get along to the Norbury.

Performances take place at 7.30pm tonight (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday) and also next Thursday, Friday and Saturday (November 27 to 29). There are also Saturday matinees at 2.30pm.
