Superb Sister Act at Droitwich's Norbury Theatre had audience happy and clapping

Droitwich Editorial 13th Oct, 2016 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016   0

THIS PRODUCTION, with its cast of colourful characters, breath-taking choreography and magnificent music had the audience happy and clapping throughout.

It centres on singer Deloris Van Cartier who, after witnessing a murder, is put in the safest house around – a convent.

And it is this clash of the two worlds which made Sister Act such a superb spectacle for those watching.

Every single person on the stage brought something to the show and had their own ’15 minutes of fame’, leaving the crowd delighted.

The first half was packed with witty one-liners and many magical musical moments – from when Mother Superior (Ann Mayor) and Deloris (Eve Meusz) were thrown together in a situation neither of them wanted or relished.

The chemistry between those two characters was unbelievable and, during the touching moment towards the end when their relationship was ‘reconciled’ you could hear a pin drop.

Going back to the first half, other highlights included the close call bar scene which you could tell totally engrossed the audience and the scores ‘Meet the Nuns’ and ‘It’s Good to be a Nun’ where Rebecca Fearnley playing Mary Patrick came into her own – paving the way for her to shine in the rest of the play.

Holly Russell as Mary Robert also excelled, laying claim to the best solo vocal performances of the evening.

The second half continued in the same high quality vain as the first with plenty of stand-out moments when Deloris, having adapted to the quiet life in the convent, was forced to leave.

And while every nun on the stage was excellently portrayed there were some memorable moments from the men as well.

In fact, some of the routines featuring Curtis (Glyn Diggett ), Joey (Thomas Cullen), Pablo (Paul Bellamy, TJ (Nathan Wilde) and Ernie (Robert Martin) got the loudest laughs of the evening – most notably Lady in the Long Black Dress where our on stage fellas were trying to work out their best ways of gaining access to the convent.

Robert Holcroft was also solid as Eddie to cap some magnificent male performances on an all-round thoroughly enjoyable evening.

The set was also very impressive – particularly the church, complete with ornate stained glass windows.

Overall this heaven-sent production will be arguably the best you will see this year and earned a well-deserved standing ovation at the end.

The Norbury has got into the habit (excuse the pun) of putting on perfect performances and this one has to be up there – quite possibly the ‘best bar nun’.

Tickets for this are selling fast so if you want to go and see it you will need to get in quick – there is limited availability for the evening performances at 7.30pm on Wednesday and Thursday (October 19 and 20). Visit www.norburytheatre.co.uk or call 01905 770154 to book.
