RUBERY Drama Group’s fast, frantic and funny farce Darling Mr London is British comedy at its best.
Set in the 1970s, before mobile phones, it centres around Edward Hawkins who is an operator on a continental telephone exchange.
Having flirted with the foreign operators, he suddenly finds them all turning up on is doorstep wanting to meet the wonderful ‘Mr London’.
He then has the thankless task of keeping the girls from his wife, the curate who is lodging with them, and his mother-in-law.
There were plenty of near perfect performances on the night, which really brought the scintillating script to life.
Julie Edwards was great as wife Rose Hawkins and Chris Jones was hilarious as curate Mark Thomson, especially during the drunk scenes.
Jo Anscombe impressed as battleaxe mother-in-law Mrs Routledge and Paula Hogarth as Monique and Wendy Pardoe as Sylvana were also amazing.
But Paul Harris as Edward Hawkins absolutely stole the show with his unbelievably energetic performance and the perfect delivery of some great comedy lines.
In fact, the chemistry between the characters was one of the many highlights of the show,
The interaction between the characters was seamless – making the plot more believable.
It was a relatively small stage for such a large cast of characters but that just added to the pace of the production.
Literally, as one door opened another one closed, which is how it should be in classic farce.
Darling Mr London has been a darling production for those who have seen it so far.
