A WORLD renowned peace activist is set to come to Droitwich to talk on ‘Soil, Soul and Society in the Context of Brexit’ .
Everyone is invited to go along to Droitwich High School at 8pm on May 11 to listen to the wise words of Satish Kumar, star of BBC2’s Earth Pilgrim TV documentary and a previous guest on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs.
“He provides us with a different way of thinking and seeing a problem,” said Steve Tonry, who has organised the event.
“Everyone seems very depressed at the moment but he has a more positive, aspirational way – it’s the art of the possible.”
Born in 1936 Satish Kumar is an Indian activist and has been a Jain monk, nuclear disarmament advocate, pacifist, and is the current editor of Resurgence & Ecologist magazine.
Now living in England, he led a peace walk to the capitals of four of the nuclear-armed countries – Washington, London, Paris and Moscow, a trip of over 8,000 miles.
He insists reverence for nature should be at the heart of every political and social debate. Defending criticism that his goals are unrealistic, he said: “Look at what realists have done for us.
“They have led us to war and climate change, poverty on an unimaginable scale, and wholesale ecological destruction. Realism is an outdated, overplayed and wholly exaggerated concept.
“Humanity seems to be facing numerous crises, political, economic and environmental, to name but a few.
“Hence, many people can see no positive way forward but as Einstein said: ‘a problem cannot be solved at the same level of thinking that created it’.”
“Satish Kumar has a vision of world peace and humanity, is very much in accordance with Rotary’s vision of ‘peace the world over’.
Tickets for the event, organised by the Rotary Club of Redditch, are £6 to include tea and coffee available from Steve at satishk@uwclub.net.
