14th century Hampton Lovett church tower restored to former glory

Sonny Rackham 6th Sep, 2024   0

RESTORATION works to repair the 14th century tower of a Droitwich church in Hampton Lovett have finally been completed.

St Mary and All Saints Church was awarded £100,000 in National Lottery Heritage Fund grant back in May 2023 to enable a restoration of the historic bell tower and previously hidden priest’s room.

The restoration has been completed just in time for the church to open its doors to visitors during Heritage Open Days.

The church will welcome all for an array of activities and exhibits showcasing its rich history and heritage from 10am on September 7 and 8.

A ceremony to reopen the tower will take place and visitors will have an opportunity to take a guided or virtual tour of the tower.

St Mary and All Saints Church will also showcase an exhibit around its nearby railway and footpath connections. Visitors can see a working model of the local railway, the church and the old Cutnall Green Halt.

Attendees can also learn about locally relevant Operation Starfish in World War II, discover the Monarch’s Way footpath passing through the churchyard – the escape route of the future King Charles II after the Battle of Worcester in 1651.

This year’s Heritage Open Days take place between September 6 and September 15 as an opportunity to celebrate the nations heritage, community and history by exploring hidden places and trying new experiences.
