AN ARMED Forces veteran has joined the ranks to help restore Droitwich’s Willow Court Farmhouse thanks to a new apprenticeship as part of the project.
Veteran Richard has begun his carpentry apprenticeship journey which will see him learn the essential skills and techniques to help preserve and restore historic buildings.
Richard will work with specialist heritage and conservation contractor Messenger on the project, which is set to last about 80 weeks.
They will carry out a full-time carpentry training programme, working alongside experienced carpenters, as well as gain knowledge of traditional and heritage building practices.
To kick off the new journey, the National Lottery Heritage Fund has given him a brand-new carpenter’s tool kit, equipping him with the tools he needs to succeed.
The position was specially created for ex-service personnel as part of Wychavon District Council’s commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant.
A spokesperson for Wychavon District Council said: “Join us in wishing Richard the best in his new role. Together, we’ll continue to honour and preserve our history.”
The council believes in providing extra support to veterans, ‘ensuring their remarkable service does not hold them back.’
The restoration project has recently entered its next phase which will secure the preservation of the Grade II Willow Court Farmhouse and its transformation into six affordable flats.
It has been made possible with support from Wychavon and The National Lottery Heritage Fund, with thanks to National Lottery players. The site is overseen by Worcestershire Building Preservation Trust in partnership with Wychavon and Platform Housing Group.
