THERE is now just a week to go to Drotwich’s annual Salt Fest which this year celebrates its tenth anniversary.
The event held in the town centre and Vines Park throughout next weekend will be officially opened at 10.30am on the Saturday (September 12) by Droitwich Spa Mayor Coun Graham Beale and Coun Val Wood, chairman of Wychavon District Council.
Visitors will be able to learn about the Spa’s salt history in Salt Alley, through displays and activities such as salt making demonstrations, salt carving and even model cars powered by salt.
Entertainment includes a ‘salty sing-a-long’, a re-enactment and poetry reading by Droitwich poet, Sarah James.
Roman re-enactors will once again be invading the town and setting up their camp in Vines Park.
And visitors will have the chance to find out about how they lived and about the life of the Roman soldier, including the clothes they wore and their diets.
The Romans will also be offering storytelling sessions.
Droitwich Arts Network will be hosting an art exhibition by local artists and the Community Service Zone features information on a range of issues from organisations including the police, Fortis Living and local support groups.
There is a packed programme of live music throughout the weekend in the Vines Park marquee with acts including Droitwich Community Choir, Paper Moon – winners of the Droitwich High School Battle of the Bands 2015 – and awarding winning folk band the Roving Crows.
A farmers’ market and craft market will grace St Andrews Street and the High Street, there will be a real ale bar for over 18s and for the youngsters, a farm animal corner, circus skills, a duck race and much more.
A dog show takes place on the Sunday (September 13) to raise money for Danemere Animal Rescue and Bishops Wood Swan Rescue. Run by local vets MacArthur, Barstow and Gibbs, it features nine classes. Visit http://www.mbgvet.co.uk/home.html for more information.
And athletic residents will be able to test their skills with the return of the Salt Fest 9 Race along the Droitwich Canal and surrounding countryside.
