RESIDENTS in Droitwich are being reminded by police not to leave their cars unattended whilst warming them up on cold mornings as opportunist thieves could be around.
As the weather cools down and mornings get darker and colder, it can be tempting to put your car heaters on and nip inside however the force are advising strongly against this.
West Mercia Police say reports of these types of vehicle thefts increase in the winter months with opportunist thieves driving around residential areas looking for such situations.
The force wants to remind residents to remain with your car whilst windows are de-misting. Drivers should also be aware that some insurers will not cover you if your car is stolen with the keys inside.
Also, if your house keys are stolen alongside your car, your home is vulnerable too.
A spokesperson for Droitwich Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) said: “Some vehicle owners nip inside for just a few seconds to collect a bag or finish the last mouthful of their breakfast coffee – but that’s all the time an opportunist thief needs.
“Drivers who ignore this advice are taking big risks.
“So, this winter, don’t give criminals an easy ride by leaving your car running unattended.”
