DROITWICH’S Friday Charter Market should continue – that is the recommendation of a group which was set up to oversee its future after a three-month trial period.
The market which can have anything up to 25 stalls has been taking place on Victoria Square and on Saltbarrows since it was launched in April.
The town council’s Charter Market Sub-Committee meet with the event organisers Joe Jones and his son, to review its success and decide whether it should become a permanent fixture in the town.
While there has been a few minor teething problems the pair said they were happy with how the market had been progressing.
There have been a variety of stalls which offer goods such as meats, pies, ice cream, fish, hardware, fast food, plants, flowers, bread, cakes and many more.
Issues were brought up regarding the lack of footfall down to the Saltbarrows. Suggestions were made to put up permanent or temporary signage but no decisions were made.
Mr Jones said everything had been going nicely and he was pleased but he did believe the Saltbarrows market needed more work and nurturing as many people did not realise it was there.
“We have had people come from Evesham, Stratford-upon-Avon, Birmingham and Bromsgrove.
“Many visitors have said they are very happy they have a market in the town.
“So far we have had good feedback from the public relaying the messages it is something they have wanted for a long time,” he added.
The issue will now go before the council’s Community and Amenities Committee.
