DROITWICH’S Matt Richards – who won a gold and a silver at the Paris 2024 Olympics – received a hero’s homecoming on Sunday.
Matt won the 4x200m freestyle relay, along with James Guy, Tom Dean and Duncan Scott, after narrowly finishing second in the 200m frestyle earlier in the games.
On Sunday the crowds gathered to give him a warm welcome as he returned to the town with his medals.
Matt’s grandmother posted on Facebook after the event: “A huge thank you from the Richards clan to everyone who came out to welcome Matt ‘home’.
“He was really surprised and touched, didn’t expect anything at all.”
“So well done and thank you to the lovely people of Droitwich, we really appreciate it.”
Coun Richard Morris said: “Matt who was so appreciative and took time to talk and have pictures, proving to be a true inspiration to others.”
He praised Matt’s family and Droitwich Police for organising the event and added he hoped there would be an official town reception for him at a later date.
Next up – the Paralympics
Coun Morris also wished luck to Droitwich’s Paralympians Rebecca and Matthew Redfern and urged the town to get behind them when the Paris Paralympics starts on Wednesday, August 28.
