Droitwich Salt Fest draws in the crowds

Droitwich Editorial 18th Sep, 2014 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016   0

ROMAN re-enactors marching through the town, a host of entertainment, displays and demonstrations brought thousands of people to Droitwich Spa over the weekend for the annual Salt Fest.

On the Saturday (September 13), the festival was officially opened by Coun Lynne Duffy, the chairman of Wychavon District Council and Droitwich Spa Mayor, Coun Bob Brookes.

The event, which has been getting bigger and better every year, celebrates the Spa’s proud salt history.

An exhibition of work done by local artists was held in St Andrew’s Church and Droitwich Arts Network’s activities outside the church were given a great response by residents trying their hand at painting.

Farmers’ and craft markets adorned St Andrew’s Street, there was a street market in the High Street and there was a a youth music showcase in Vines Park.

On Sunday there was a blues and jazz afternoon, animal corner, art activities, circus skills, a duck race and dog show.

Coun Brookes, said: “We had a lot of visitors from out of town and those who came up to me afterwards said they really enjoyed the event.

“It was a real community event and I’d like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers and helpers who made it such a success.

“The Romans wanted a bonus for attending the day and luckily we had some salt in reserve to pay them a salary with.”

The Salt Fest concluded at 3.30pm on the Sunday when the Women’s Institute Centenary Baton came to Vines Park. It started touring the country in January and will finish up at the Royal Albert Hall in June next year.
