A STUDENT from Droitwich who started an online jewellery company when she was 18 that turned over £86,000 in its first year is vying for a prestigious business award.

Rowena Simmons, who is the second year of her Business, Finance and Entrepreneurship degree at Worcester Business School and runs Black & White Boutique, has already won the regional heat in the ‘Best Digital Company’ section of the 2014 Lloyds Bank Enterprise Awards.

Rowena said, because her father also has his own company, she grew up with an entrepreneurial knowledge and experience.

She added it had always been her ambition, ever since she was ten years old, to have her own business.

“I have definitely been surprised with my success so far for Black & White Boutique.”

It all started when Rowena began selling a small number of bracelets to her friends at school and her company, which specialises in female costume jewellery, is now exporting to 35 different countries.

Over the last couple of months, she has been looking at setting up multiple companies and would like to run the companies full-time after she has finished at the her studies.

Rowena said she chose the University of Worcester as it was one of the only ones to offer entrepreneurship whilst allowing students to undertake finance or other modules at the same time.

“The university has been very supportive regarding my commitments.

“It isn’t east studying full-time and running a business – in fact, everyone else at the Lloyds Enterprise Awards has already graduated, and they couldn’t believe what we had achieved whilst juggling our time between studying and running the business.

“My lecturers are also a great help. communicating with people who are experts within their field has allowed me to develop my knowledge.”

Black & White Boutique is one of nine companies shortlisted and will compete with nine other regional winners for the £10,000 prize at Edgbaston Cricket Club.
