A CHURCH community group in Fernhill Heath has recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with two of its founding members still attending to this day.
In August 1974, three young ladies from Fernhill Heath waited anxiously to see if anyone would attend their advertised Young Mothers Group at the local baptist church.
Two mothers turned up to join the free founders at Fernhill Heath Baptist Church and remarkably two of those original members are still part of the Wednesday Morning Ladies, as they have become known, 50 years later in the village.
The two long-standing members are Mrs. Bronwyn Mitchell and Mrs. Myra Brierley and they could never have imagined the group would celebrate such a milestone anniversary, with the two still involved.
Over the years the group have had many enjoyable times. More joined and young mums became grandparents, and in some cases, great-grandparents. Sadly others died. But the group is still thriving.
Mrs. Mitchell said: “I think this is because we have a mixture of social activities, outdoor trips and simply a time to enjoy chatting together.
“We always start with “keep-fit” exercises although they are now less strenuous than previously!” Mrs. Brierley added “We are a very friendly group and have been able to support many local charities with our annual quizzes and competitions.”
The group meets every Wednesday morning at 10.15am to 12 noon.
Minister Rev. Jeff Porter added: “It is wonderful that the ladies have been able to maintain this happy fellowship over such a long time and I hope they will continue to do so for many years.”
