Grandad Ray's Alzheimer's inspires family into tackling Snowdon

Droitwich Editorial 13th Jun, 2015 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016   0

A FAMILY of Droitwich fund-raisers will soon be putting on their climbings boots and tackling Mount Snowdon in the dark for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Aimee, Bailey, Jordan and Lois Press will all be embarking on their charity hike on July 11 with nothing but torches and moonlight to help them see their way.

Aimee said they were all taking part in the Alzheimer’s Society Snowdon Midnight Challenge because their grandad Ray Press had been fighting the disease for a number of years.

The four-man team, who are aiming to raise more than £2,000, will join a group of other trekkers of all ages and backgrounds before they set off about 10.30pm – this will give them enough time to reach the summit for sunrise.

Aimee said they had been doing lots of regular training walking – about five miles, twice a week, and had tried to get out into the countryside to do longer walks on the hills whenever they could.

She added: “I’m looking forward to the climb and it will be great to see the sunrise from the highest point in Wales.

“The Snowdon Midnight Challenge really captured my imagination and I think it will be really exciting to do this hike by torch and moonlight.

“It’s great to know that the money we raise will help support people to live well with dementia today and fund research to find a cure for tomorrow.”

Jeremy Hughes, Alzheimer’s Society’s chief executive, said one in three people over 65 would develop dementia which was caused by a disease in the brain and could happen to anyone.

“As a charity, we rely on the generosity of individuals to help us continue our vital work,” Mr Hughes said.

“Please back them in their fund-raising efforts so that Alzheimer’s Society can continue leading the fight against dementia.”
