A BENCH to remember Droitwich boy Alfie Steele who was brutally killed at the hands of his mother and her partner has been installed near his home.
Hindlip, Martin Hussingtree and Salwarpe Parish Council have funded the bench to honour the nine-year-old who died at his home on Vashon Drive in February 2021.
His mother Carla Scott and her partner Dirk Howell were jailed for his death in June last year. The bench on Centenary Way will soon be accompanied by a memorial garden, funded and maintained by a local residents association.
“The bench is a reminder that a young life was lost at an early age and he should be remembered,” said Philip Oakley, parish council chairman.
“Alfie’s death was a terrible event and I think the bench brings home thoughts of similar cases up and down the country.”
The council has also installed two other benches within the parish for the community, one of which honours the coronation of King Charles III.
“The benches are for people to sit, reflect, contemplate and relax,” added Philip.
Residents and nearby local authorities have been ‘very supportive’ of the bench, however some have questioned the proximity of the bench to Alfie’s former home.
Philip told the Standard he believes the view from where the bench is located is nice and its closeness to the upcoming memorial garden makes it the right location.
