THE BACKGROUND to the valuable acquisition of local maps dating back to 1883 will be the subject at the next meeting of Droitwich History Society.
The event will take place at 7.30pm on September 4 at the Community Hall on Heritage Way.
Committee member Alan Baker will disclose how the society came to obtain the maps which are at a scale of 25 inches to the mile – many time larger than the 1:50,000 scale normally used.
Alan said: “They cover a wide area, including not only the town centre, but several miles around.
“The differences between these maps and those we are familiar with is the degree of detail, the careful mapping of boundaries and watercourses, and the calculation of areas.
“It is astonishing to see what the area looked like before its later development.”
The illustrated presentation will include the tracing of a parish boundary and just how exactly it confirms the written evidence compiled more than years ago.
The talk will be a background to a free daytime exhibition of all the maps at Droitwich Library on September 27.
