Lantern Festival unveiled for Droitwich Christmas lights switch on

Sonny Rackham 4th Sep, 2024 Updated: 4th Sep, 2024   0

A NEW lantern festival is being launched to coincide with Droitwich’s Christmas lights switch on in November.

The festival, organised by Droitwich Lions Club, will see around 25 to 30 entrants assemble in the Community Hall before parading their lanterns outside St Richards House from 4.30pm to 5pm on November 23.

Droitwich Lions is hoping to raise funds from this festival to support its good causes in the town including its Santa Sleigh and Monthly Book Club.

It looks to take inspiration from similar long-running festivals such as the Stoney Stratford Lantern Project and nearby Wolverton Lantern Festival.

To bring in funds, the festival will include an individual entrance fee of £5, or £10 for families and businesses. Trophies will be awarded to the winners of the best family and best business entrant at 6pm at the light switch on ceremony.

Sponsors, which will help provide grander prizes for winners, will be sought for the following year after the festival’s debut event.

Workshops are scheduled from 11am to 3pm on both September 21 and October 26, at Droitwich Community Hall on Heritage Way, to give participants a chance sign up and work on their lantern’s.

The workshops will include a demonstration of a basic lantern being made. Lanterns can then be made during the workshop and customised at home.

Those interested in participating are asked to go the festival’s events page on Facebook.
