A DROITWICH fireman has received a prestigious award after helping save a man’s life while he was in Glasgow visiting family and friends.
It was back in March 2013 when Peter Doran was having a meal out and a diner at another table in the hotel had a cardiac arrest and collapsed.
Mr Doran administered first aid to the man and gave CPR for about 15 minutes and, during the time spent with the patient, he twice found that there was no pulse and had to restart the man’s heart.
He worked on the man until the paramedics arrived. They were then able to successfully use the defibrillator and rush the man to hospital.
The hotel’s duty supervisor assisted Mr Doran with the casualty’s airway and is of the opinion that the man would not have survived had it not been for the Droitwich firefighter’s quick-thinking actions.
He was also praised for his efforts by the ambulance service and it was for that reason he was awarded the Chief Fire Officer’s Letter of Congratulations last year and was put forward by the service for The Royal Humane Society Commendation.
The accolade was established in 1774, specifically to recognise praiseworthy actions by people living in the UK.
Mr Doran received his award at a special ceremony at Hereford’s historic town hall, which was attended by the family and friends of those being honoured, principal officers from the service and distinguished guests. They included the Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire, Countess Darnley, the High Sheriff of Herefordshire, Mjr Patrick Darling DL MFH and the chairman of the Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Authority, Coun Derek Prodger MBE.
Phill Sanders, who is the Station Commander at the Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service headquarters, praised Mr Dorans’ actions and said because of the nature of the job, firefighters would act to help someone whether they were on duty or not.
“When Firefighter Doran saw the man collapse, he didn’t think twice and went to his aid.
“Firefighters undergo substantial trauma training which can be used anytime and anywhere to help people and that is exactly what he did,” he added
