LIVING for the moment, giggly Droitwich centenarian celebrated her 100th birthday with a party at Westmead Residential Care Home.
Elsie Tattersall, who was born in Smethwick as one of four children, marked the marvellous milestone on Sunday (August 24) with her family and friends at the care home where she has spent the last five years.
During the war the former senior secretary was lucky to survive.
Elsie said: “I remember bombs being dropped near my home and having to spend many nights sleeping in the shelter at the bottom of the garden.”
In 1960 Elsie found true love when she met family friend Eric – the couple wed after six years and had a very happy marriage until Eric sadly died in 1990.
Despite this ordeal Elsie, who is a talented pianist, has maintained an incredibly positive outlook.
When asked her secret to reaching 100 she said: “Living day-by-day, never knowing what is round the corner and having a positive attitude towards life.
“I am grateful for reaching a great age with all of my faculties, many good friends and a good family.”
When asked if she had any claims to fame Elsie said: “Not yet, but I’m working on it.”
Sue Stokes, the home’s manager, said: “Elsie is a marvellous and extremely independent lady and we are so proud to be celebrating this special birthday with her.
“Elsie has a warm smile and always has a girlish giggle for everyone she knows and is truly part of our family here at Westmead.”
