THE MAYOR of Droitwich has issued a rallying call to residents to have their say on proposals to improve the town centre.
Coun Bob Brookes has organised a meeting about the plans for 6.15pm this Tuesday (October 7) in the Council Chamber, St Richard’s House, opposite the library in Victoria Square.
He said the people of Droitwich had to act now to ensure the right improvements were made to the Spa as it could be many years before an opportunity like this came up again.
The meeting will highlight the investment proposals that Worcestershire County Council has put forward for improving roads and services in the Spa and it will also help Droitwich Town Council convey residents’ views when it makes its recommendations at the planning committee meeting the week after.
Coun Brookes said: “Parts of Droitwich Spa, have deteriorated over the last few years and are badly in need of a ‘facelift’.
“Residents and businesses alike are keen to see the High Street, town centre streets, pathways and open spaces improved, to make the town centre more welcoming to visitors and shoppers, boosting the local economy and community life. “
The Mayor added he wanted to make sure all residents were made aware of the plans so they could have their say and the meeting on Tuesday which would also look at changes to the traffic flow in the area and the issue of whether the High Street should become a completely pedestrianised zone.
Similar improvement schemes carried out in Bewdley, Lowesmoor and Upton-upon-Severn have been very successful but there is limited funding available, so residents need to make their voices heard on what areas for improvement they would like to see done first.
“It is vital the county council knows what needs to be done as a priority.
“The changes proposed will shape the centre of our town for many years to come and I urge residents and business people to come to this meeting and give their opinions on the county council’s proposals.
“It will be many years before we have an opportunity like this again, so I want it to be right for Droitwich.” added Coun Brookes.
Those who are unable to get to the meeting can give their views by completing the online survey.
