A DROITWICH lad is in with a chance of securing a racing scholarship after taking Midlands karting competitions by storm.
11-year-old Zachary Smith from Ombersley, has secured a spot in the final of the X-Kart Scholarship which could see him winning a fully funded season of elite karting if he comes out on top.
Zach who is nicknamed the Orange Stig because of his ginger hair and bright coloured helmet, boots and overalls began indoor karting two years ago with qualifications in local and regional finals before progressing to outdoor competitions.
He came fourth in his first Daytona Tamworth championship, missing out on a podium finish by a single point. He later went on to win treble titles, two in the cadet category and one in the junior category.
Now, he is racing his first championship at Daytona Milton Keynes where he came second in his first round. This year he competed in his first season in Club 100, an elite arrive and drive series against 85 other drivers, with over 60 competitors in each round.
Despite some bad luck recently, where he’s spun out when in really strong positions, he has secured himself a spot to compete for the coveted scholarship.
If Zach impresses in the competition on October 14 he could secure a spot for the full season next year. He will be assessed on key attributes including racing and driving ability, fitness, and media engagement.
Zach is very focused on his racing, practicing every day on his at-home racing simulator on simulation driving games such as Formula One, Assetto Corsa and KartSim.
The Orange Stig has even been recognised on the Talented and Gifted Young Athlete Programme at Rivers Fitness, Droitwich leisure centre.
His family say before races, Zach can be quite nervous and his stammer can worsen when ‘on the spot’. It will be a test to see how he handles the social aspect of the competition but his drive and focus during races is where he really shines, added his family.
A spokesperson for Daytona Tamworth has praised Zach’s natural ability behind the wheel, referring to the Orange Stig as being among ‘the fastest drivers’ they have encountered.
The Daytona Tamworth manager added: “His perseverance is unmatched and evident in his continuous pursuit of excellence and success on the racetrack.
“His success is also down to his ability to remain calm under pressure which is a skill most young drivers struggle to develop.
“Zachary’s composed demeanour showcases his mental fortitude.
“In addition to his on-track prowess, Zachary exhibits commendable sportsmanship. He respects his fellow competitors and upholds the value of fairplay.”
Zach’s family are also hopeful he can secure sponsorship but are mostly focused on highlighting their son’s success so far and ongoing journey to compete at the highest level.
