DROITWICH’S Rebecca Redfern won gold for Great Britain in the women’s 100m breaststroke SB13 event at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
Redfern produced a superb swim to win gold in a time of 1min 16.02secs – more than a second ahead of USA’s Olivia Chambers who took silver and nearly three seconds clear of America’s Colleen Young who secured bronze.
The Droitwich swimmer claimed her third Paralympic medal and first gold after winning silver at both Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
Redfern told Channel 4: “It’s going to make me cry [becoming Paralympic champion].
“It’s something we’ve worked really hard for, two silver’s in the first two Paralympics and now a gold, it means the world.
“The crowd has been amazing, it really spurred me on, I know my family is somewhere here so to have them here with me is really special.
“My son will probably say it [the medal] is heavy and shiny hopefully.”
She added: “It feels really surreal. I was half-expecting somebody to come out of lane one and beat me. A gold medal is amazing, it’s crazy.
“We’ve had a hell of a journey to get here. No one could have predicted me being here and to be standing on top of the podium, it’s amazing.
“I love all aspects of my life – my teaching, my swimming and obviously my son and my family. I do what I do because I enjoy it, and it’s so much fun racing with those girls.”
