A COMMUNITY scheme, which has been helping vulnerable people in Droitwich for more than 25 years, could be forced to close if more volunteers cannot be found.
The Droitwich Community Transport Scheme is in desperate need of volunteer drivers to help provide door-to-door transport for more than 45 people a week.
Run by the Droitwich Spa and Rural Council for Voluntary Services (DCVS), the scheme provides a lifeline for those residents who are unable to use conventional public transport or do not have access to an alternative method of travelling, due to their age, a disability or mobility issues.
It helps those who use the scheme get to medical appointments and day centres and enables them to embark on social activities and visit family and friends. It is aimed at helping vulnerable remain independent and reduce the risk of through social or rural isolation.
The worrying news about the scheme comes just days before National Volunteers Week, which begins on Sunday (June 1) and runs until next Saturday (June 7).
DCVS’ assistant development worker Bethany Trueman said: “Without the volunteers there would be no service and as so many people rely on the transport, it would have a huge impact if were to dissolve, leaving many people unable to attend doctors’ appointments or get out into the community.
“The scheme is calling out for more volunteer drivers in order to meet the high demand for the service and lessen the blow of the cuts on the local bus routes.
“In order to expand, the scheme desperately needs more volunteers covering a wider area.”
Steve Wilson, who has been a volunteer driver for more than ten years, said it was extremely rewarding supporting local people jn the town.
“I help provide a vital service for the most vulnerable people in our community and surrounding villages.
“Sometimes people feel lonely, isolated and I am the only friendly face they see so it’s really important to help them maintain their independence and show we care – It’s great to know I can make a difference..”
The DCVS is currently also recruiting trustees to serve on the vibrant charity’s governing body. The organisation is looking for people with experience or skills in accountancy, law, IT, human resources, fund-raising, marketing or community services.
