Volunteer training day for first Droitwich foodbank

Droitwich Editorial 8th May, 2014 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016   0

A VOLUNTEER training day for those wanting to be involved with Droitwich’s first foodbank will be held at the town’s Methodist Church between 10am and 3pm next Friday (May 16).

The project is being set up by Churches Together in Droitwich (CTiD) in conjunction with the Trussell Trust.

Grants have been received by the Droitwich Spa Area Partnership and the Cinnamon Trust and several other local organisations and individuals have pledged support.

It is anticipated the foodbank will be up-and-running this summer and local food collection points will be set up where people can donate non-perishable food items.

Food collection days at local supermarkets are also being planned.

It is hoped a team of volunteers will be set up and among the roles will be warehousing, weighing, labelling and stock control, sorting food into emergency packs, administration, welcoming and listening to clients, help with food collections, delivering donations and fund-raising.

Acting joint project co-ordinator Graham Wilson, from CTiD, said: “If you feel you can offer to help with any of these tasks, whether once a week, once a month or just occasionally , we want to hear from you.”

Graham said the preparations setting up the foodbank had been going well.

“After a lot of hard work, the steering group has managed to secure space to store food donations, thanks to an offer from Wychavon District Council of the use of two storage units rent free for a year.”

He added a suitable distribution premises had been found, close to the town’s public transport links and, from there, the organisers planned to hold foodbank sessions twice a week.
