A SPONSORED walk will take place this weekend to raise funds for St Richard’s Hospice.
The sixth annual Waterways Walk, which begins at Diglis on Sunday (August 2) and is sponsored by the Droitwich Spa Marina, offers participants the choice of two distances – an 11-mile route from Diglis, via Tibberton, to Hanbury Wharf and a 21-mile flat circular route. The longer walk returns to Droitwich from Diglis along the restored Worcester and Birmingham Canal, taking in 41 locks.
Among the walkers will be Karen Bradley, from Worcester who will be taking part in memory of her mum who was cared for by St Richard’s before her death in 2011.
She will be joined by her partner Robert Williams, best friend Jennie Maslin and her mother’s neighbour Leigh Allen.
The team have previously taken part in the hospice’s Midnight Walk and this year decided to take on the 21 mile challenge.
Ms Bradley said: “St Richard’s Hospice was brilliant while my mum was ill and gave above and beyond support to the whole family.
“We wanted to take part in another hospice event and decided that the 21-mile Waterways Walk would give us a new challenge and great opportunity to raise money for this great cause.”
She added the group had been doing plenty of walking in preparation for the walk.

Alison Parkes, St Richard’s senior fund-raiser, said it was a wonderful way to enjoy the beauty and nature of Worcestershire’s waterways.
“This annual event is always great fun with a friendly atmosphere and is suitable for all the family, although you also need to be reasonably fit to walk either route.”
The 21-mile walk begins between 7am and 8am and the 11-mile walk starts between 10.30am and 11.30am at Hanbury Wharf.
Registration is £10 per person, £5 for under 16s. For more information and to register, visit www.strichards.org.uk/waterwayswalk or call the hospice’s fund-raising Team on 01905 763963.
