Athletes impress in the second city

THERE were some impressive performances from Bromsgrove students in Saturday’s annual Mason Trophy event at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.

The competition features ten counties – each with two competitors per event – and Hereford and Worcestershire finished fifth overall, with both boys’ teams finishing in second place.

Athletes had qualified to take part in the event through their County Schools’ Championships and overall the Hereford and Worcestershire Schools’ team improved on its team points from last year to maintain fifth place behind West Midlands, Staffordshire, Cheshire and Northamptonshire as they beat Warwickshire, Greater Manchester, Shropshire and Nottinghamshire.

These results were helped massively by the junior boys who ranked second overall in both the track and field events as well as the intermediate boys who also finished second on the track overall.

With the best young athletes from each of the ten counties competing, the standard was high and a number of the Hereford and Worcestershire athletes achieved the English Schools’ qualifying standard.

Of the students from Bromsgrove schools, Tyriq Bailey-Nicholls ran an impressive junior boys’ 100m race in just 11.3s, placing him third. The North Bromsgrove High School athlete ran the same time as the second placed Cheshire athlete and was just 0.1s behind his Hereford and Worcester team-mate Daniel Banks, who won in 11.2s.

The first seven athletes in this race ran below the English Schools’ Standard of 11.7s, demonstrating just how high the level of competition was.

Candy Lockett, who attends Bromsgrove School, threw 44.28m to finish second in the intermediate girls’ hammer, over 7m further than the English Schools’ Standard.

Blake Edwards, also from Bromsgrove School, gained English Schools Standard by 5cm in throwing 52.05 metres in the intermediate boys’ javelin competition.

There was also success for the two boys’ 4x100m relay teams, including the junior boys’ team featuring Bailey-Nicholls and Harry Liversidge of Bromsgrove School who took second place in 45.5s, with the English Schools’ Standard being 47.50s.
