Boars warned to be on guard

Droitwich Editorial 24th Oct, 2014 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016   0

BROMSGROVE RFC head coach Dan Protherough has warned his players to be on their guard when they travel to lowly Longton tomorrow (Saturday)

Bromsgrove were on a run of three straight victories in National Three Midlands before Lichfield came from behind to clinch a 33-31 win at Finstall Park.

Protherough admitted the defeat last Saturday was a “wake-up call” for his players and he said they should expected another tough outing at 12th placed Longton.

“We did not execute anything very well and Lichfield took their opportunities,” he said. “Our accuracy was not good enough and that goes for our forwards and backs.

“Our scrummaging and our lineout must improve, but we also did not finish things off on Saturday as we missed a number of chances which allowed Lichfield the opportunity to come back and win it.

“We scored one penalty try and another off a scrum, so we just need to link up better between the forwards and the backs and play more as a team.

“There are no easy teams in this league as Lichfield proved and Longton will be another tough test. They have won a couple of games, so we will need to be on our guard.”

But the Bromsgrove boss, who is set to be without Wayne Cooper this weekend, believed they were still in touch with the promotion places.

“Although we have had a blip, the top of the table teams are not too far away as only two or three points separate sixth and second, so it is still close,” he added.

“We have got some tough games to come as we are playing two of the top five in the next few weeks so we have got to be ready for that.”
