THERE was a mixture of emotions at Bromsgrove Tennis Club on Sunday as their men’s C team began their Winter League campaign with a 4-0 thrashing of their newly-promoted D side.
This early test of the selectors decisions had added significance as new junior and men’s B champion Jack Walters has chosen to drop down to play with summer partner Tim Roland in the D team.
And they looked like they were going to get their side off to the perfect start in this highly-anticipated Division Six clash as they claimed the first set 7-6.
However, John Dudek and Voitek Niedzwiedz came storming back to win the next two 6-3, 6-3 to give the C team pair victory.
Walters and Roland had another close contest against Tim Wright and John Casey, but once again the C pair prevailed as they won 6-4, 7-6.
And there was no way back for the D team as their second pair, Mel McGregor and Alan Colley suffered successive straight sets defeats as the C team claimed a comfortable win, which puts them at the top of the table.
Captain John Casey said: “There’s always a lot of pride at stake in these matches and despite the 4-0 scoreline it was a close match.
“Following their promotion last year I’m sure the D team will establish themselves in the division this year.”
