HIMBLETON skipper Stuart Dickenson believes their Worcestershire County League Division Two opener against Coombs Wood this weekend will provide a good ‘yardstick’ for the season ahead.
After finishing as Division Three champions last season, the Meadow Boys begin the new season in earnest tomorrow (Saturday) hoping to get their campaign off to the perfect start.
But season openers could not come much tougher than Coombs Wood, according to Dickenson.
“They’re an established club at this level so it will provide a good yardstick for us,” he said.
“I’m anticipating a close contest given that both sides will be a bit rusty.
“The weather this week is giving us a fighting chance of getting a game in but I expect all clubs are in the same boat with pre-season preparation – it’s not been easy.
“But our bowling attack has been working extra hard in the nets to be ready for the challenge.
“The wicket is likely to give the bowlers help so I’m hoping our batsman can apply themselves in what will be a tricky opener.”
Carrying the same squad as last season, Dickenson is expecting to name a full strength squad for their first Division Two clash.
“I just want the players to go out and prove themselves as worthy competitors in this division,” added Dickenson.
“As long as they do that and enjoy their cricket, I’ll be a happy captain.
“If we can get a few wins in the early games, who knows what will happen?”
