LEADERS DROITWICH C outclassed Bromsgrove C in the local Division Four East derby in the Herefordshire & Worcestershire Men’s Winter League last weekend.

Pete Morris and Simon Hailstone came from a set down to win 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 in the opening rubber against Droitwich duo Neil Bates and Jon Sarriegui.

But that was as good as it got for Bromsgrove, with their second pairing of Derren Brown and Harley Jones losing 6-2, 6-3 to Richard Clive and Ben Steel, followed by a 6-2, 6-1 defeat at the hands of Bates and Sarriegui.

More fight was shown by Bromsgrove in the final rubber in an attempt to rescue a draw, but Morris and Hailstone were unable to build on a win in the first set, eventually losing 6-4, 1-6, 6-7 to keep Droitwich eight clear at the top.

Despite the defeat, Bromsgrove C have moved up to fourth.

A real spectacle was on show in Division Ten East on Sunday, when bottom-side Droitwich G pushed hosts Wollaston D all the way before going down 6-4.

Chun-Keung Leung and Jack Roberts were on the right side of a 6-2, 7-6 scoreline for Droitwich against Kevan Ashmore and Chris Smith in rubber one as the visitors made a bright start.

The hosts’ Mark James and David Tranter hit back with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 victory against Phillip Woodhouse and Mark Alexander, before the Droitwich pair stormed to a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Ashmore and Smith.

It set up a winner-takes-all scenario in the final rubber, which James and Tranter edged 6-2, 6-3 against Leung and Roberts to take the overall victory.
