THE DROITWICH Aegon Men’s B team finished their Herefordshire and Worcestershire Summer League Division Three campaign in third with a 4-2 victory over rivals Ombersley A.
Eric Cartelet came up against a solid opponent in his singles match and lost 3-6, 0-6.
It was a similar story for John Moran who also lost his singles match 3-6, 1-6 as Ombersley took the early initiative.
However, Ben Steel kept Droitwich in with a chance after his 6-2, 6-2 win before Dave Lamb levelled the scores with an impressive 6-0, 6-2 victory.
Droitwich then dominated the doubles with Cartelet and Moran winning 7-6, 6-3 and Steel and Lamb winning 6-4, 6-3 as Droitwich sealed the victory to take claim third position in the table.
The Aegon Men’s C team finished their season away to Manor Park C in a closely fought Division Four contest.
Chris Passey got Droitwich of to the perfect start with a 6-0, 6-1 win but the scores were soon level as Kevin Hodges lost 2-6, 3-6 in his singles match.
Bruce Turner was unlucky to lose his match in a third set championship tiebreak 4-6, 6-0, 0-1 but Neil Bates won a similar match 7-6, 3-6, 1-0.
The doubles were equally as tight with Passey and Hodges losing 1-6, 2-6 before Bates and Turner produced a gritty display to win theirs 7-6, 7-6.
With the scores level at 3-3, a final championship tiebreak was played to determine the winner which Manor Park grasped 10-8.
This means Droitwich finished fourth in the table.
Also completing their season was the Aegon Men’s A team who played Bewdley, the eventual champions of Division Two.
Despite the best efforts of James Nam, he lost 1-6, 3-6 against a very strong opponent.
Ian Bowman was involved in a very close battle which he sadly lost 2-6, 7-5, 0-1.
Joe Maidment got Droitwich on the scoreboard with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory as Rich Clive fell to a 3-6, 3-6 defeat in his singles match.
The doubles did not provide better luck for Droitwich as Nam and Bowman lost 0-6, 3-6 as Maidment and Clive were just beaten 6-3, 4-6, 0-1 in an entertaining encounter.
This result confirms a fourth place finish for Droitwich.
The Mixed D team travelled all the way to Bodenham on for their Division Five West fixture.
Ian Ross and Diane Owen gave their all but unfortunately lost 1-6, 3-6 and 4-6, 1-6 respectively in both of their matches.
Steven Richardson and Liz Fielden then lost both of their respective matches 0-6, 3-6 and 4-6, 0-6 as Bodenham claimed the points.
The Men’s A team got back into form following a hard-fought winning draw at home to Worcester B in Division One.
Joe Maidment and John Moran made their first A team appearances of the season but despite giving a good account of themselves, lost both of their matches 1-6, 1-6 and 2-6, 6-4, 2-6 respectively.
Matt Baker and James Nam produced some stunning shots to win their first match 6-2, 6-4 but were beaten 4-6, 6-4, 2-6 in their second match.
Mark Jones and Lee Cowan were the stars of the show for Droitwich as they won both of their respective matches 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-1 to seal the winning draw.
The Men’s F team played table-topping Bromsgrove F in their Division Nine East clash.
Roger Satterthwaite and Chris Day gave their all but lost both of their matches in straight sets.
Steven Whittaker and Paul Webber also battled hard but lost 2-6, 2-6 and 1-6, 3-6 respectively against solid opponents.
Martin Adams and Mark Alexander won their first match 6-2, 6-2 with an impressive display before a 5-7, 2-6 loss in their second.
Elsewhere, the Men’s E claimed a winning draw at Bromsgrove G in the same division.
Sam Reavey and Mark Venables lost 3-6, 3-6 in their first match and 3-6, 2-6 in their second.
Richard Probyn-Skinner and Nigel Hughes won 6-1, 6-3 in their first and produced a ruthless performance in their second to win 7-5, 6-0 and level the scores.
Phil Woodhouse and John Jenkins then won their first encounter 6-4, 6-3 and despite losing their second 6-2, 4-6, 1-6, they did enough to claim the winning draw and move into fourth.
