DROITWICH SPA Cricket Club captain Martyn Davies is confident the squad can build on last year’s progress made in Division One of the Worcestershire County League ahead of Saturday’s season opener against Cookley CC.
With friendlies against Halesowen CC and Redditch CC both falling foul of the weather, Saturday’s game for Spa’s first and second team will be the first time any player has been in the middle since last summer.
Despite their lack of match practice, Davies is confident Spa have what it takes to build upon last season’s impressive third place finish – this coming after narrowly avoiding relegation on the last day of the 2014 season.
Davies has retained the same squad of players with the exception of Australian batsman Jordan Renau who has replaced compatriot Dave Lane.
“Last season we showed the talent we have at our disposal and how important it is to get some winning momentum particularly in the early fixtures,” Davies said.
“We know anyone can beat anyone in this league so it’s all about week-to-week application and consistency.”
Davies is hopeful all-rounder Max Young will keep up his impressive run of form which won him the league’s Cricketer of the Year Award and recognition as one of the top players in the Midlands Club Cricket Conference.
He also hopes to have an ace up his sleeve by promotion Connor grant to the number three berth where he will have the opportunity to build and innings and test his talent.
Davies will play a pivotal role himself along with Jake Young; forming one of the best spin attacks in the league.
“We want to be up in the to[p half and if we get a good run of results behind us then we can put a challenge in for the title,” Davies added.
“We know anything can happen in this league so we will take it game by game.”
