Droitwich continue impressive form at Colwall

DROITWICH cruised to a comprehensive eight-wicket win at Colwall last Saturday thanks to superb all-round performances by skipper Martyn Davies and Max Young.

The duo bowled with great control and both picked up two wickets apiece with their ten-over stints costing just 17 and 18 runs respectively as Colwall failed to capitalise on their very flat home track.

The home side had made a reasonably solid start too – justifying their decision to bat first – until paceman Mark Swannick took three wickets in just five balls to put Spa in control. He finished with 4-38 as Colwall could only post 165.

Davies and Young then put the opposition’s bowlers to the sword with the bat by punishing anything slightly wayward.

They put on 132 for the first wicket, when Young departed for 78, but Davies (61 n.o) remained at the crease as Droitwich breezed to victory in just 23 overs.

Another Droitwich all-rounder in fine form was Ash Walton, who notched up his second century of the season as the Thirds smashed Cookley by 161 runs.

Walton hit 150 as Spa piled up 315-5 with Callum Goddard also making 60 before grabbing 4-23 as the visitors fell a long way short.

It was honours even in the Second and Fourth teams’ clashes against Bredon.

Spa’s second string secured a comfortable seven-wicket win and a very early finish after bowling out their opponents for only 95.

Bowling the second over, Craig Hunt captured a wicket with his first and fifth deliveries which set the tone of the match.

He finished with 5-35 and Jonny Keen claimed 4-15, whilst Mark Smith justified his last-minute inclusion with a hat-trick of catches.

The Fourths encounter was a much closer affair as Spa came up seven runs short of their 241 target despite the best efforts of James King (86) and Leon Payne (60).
