THE DROITWICH Men’s A team began their Herefordshire & Worcestershire Winter League Division One campaign with a 4-0 home defeat to Worcester A.
Captain James Nam and Ben Buckley lost their first match 6-4, 3-6, 1-6 in a tight battle before losing their second 5-7, 6-7.
Oliver Shier and Mark Jones lost both of their matches in somewhat similar circumstances – 4,6, 7-5, 5-7 in the first and 2-6, 1-6 in their second.
Unfortunately there could only be one winner as the Ladies D and Ladies E teams faced each other in their opening Division Nine East fixture.
With some fine tennis on show, it was the D team who ran out 4-0 winners.
Jackie Passey and Christina Sellers showed some excellent teamwork to beat Jackie Holliday and Alison Whiteman in straight sets before a match of high quality saw them win again in the second 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 against Hazel briggs and eileen Proby-Skinner.
Anne Everard and Elizabeth Fielden were in superb form for the D team as they won both of their matches in straight sets.
The Ladies A lost their first match of the winter season in Division One away to a strong Pershore A.
Lauren Whiteman and Heidi Harris lost their first match 2-6, 1-6 but responded well with a 6-4, 7-6 victory in their second.
Despite the best efforts of Penny Maidment and Marelize Yorke, they lost both of their matches 1-6, 4-6 and 3-6, 1-6 respectively.
Elsewhere, youngsters James Lewis, Jacob Duffy, Nico Fawcus and namesake Thomas all made their tournament debuts and did Droitwich Spa Tennis Club proud playing in the League B Mini Red tournament at Manor Park Sports Club.
