Droitwich ready for second Twickenham appearance

Droitwich Editorial 3rd May, 2018   0

DROITWICH are fully geared up for their second Twickenham experience in successive years this weekend with captain James Shewell stating the club has ‘unfinished business’.

The Monners return to the home of rugby on Sunday when they take on Camberley in the final of the RFU Intermediate Cup hoping to make amends after last year’s heartbreak.

Droitwich made the history-making run to the RFU Senior Vase final last term but ended up on the wrong side of a 35-17 reverse to Farnham.

With that defeat still fresh in the mind of Shewell, the Droitwich skipper told the Standard they want to end the season on a high after claiming the Midlands Two West (South) title a fortnight ago.

“It’s going to be a special occasion and we are confident we can get the win this time around,” he said.

“We thought reaching Twickenham was the pinnacle but having lost the final last season it gives us something new to strive for.

“We have heard little bits about Camberley but we will focus on ourselves.

“If we play to our strengths then it is up to them to try and work out our weaknesses.

“We have got no opportunities to play at Twickenham again after this season so we will be going all out to win it.”

Around 800 fans are expected to make the trip down to Twickenham and Shewell knows their support could be crucial on the day.

“The support last year was fantastic,” he said.

“Even though the stadium looked empty, the noise carried well and you could hear our fans cheering us on.

“Hopefully they will do the same again as they deserve this journey just as much as we do.

“They don’t pay to watch and support us off their own bat which we really appreciate.”

Droitwich head into their huge cup final on the back of Saturday’s 38-26 victory over Evesham at the Glyn Mitchell Memorial Ground which brought the curtain down on a memorable league campaign.

The Monners rested their key players with Twickeham in mind and gave minutes to a few youngsters who more than stood up to the test.

Brad Smith (2), Louis Ellsmore (2) and Nat Maginnis (2) got the tries while Maginnis kicked four conversions.

“It was an excellent performance,” said Shewell.

“We gave a few of the lads from the second team a chance and they did really well.

“It was another indication that there is plenty of depth in the squad which bodes well for the future.”
