Joint-boss Oliver not worried by Droitwich Spa's low league position

DROITWICH Spa joint-boss Wayne Oliver says he is not worried by the Saltmen’s low position in the Midland League Division Two table ahead of this weekend’s trip to high-flying Montpellier.

Spa currently sit fourth-from-bottom after ten games, just four points off the relegation zone.

And with a trip to Studley-based Montpellier on Saturday, Oliver told the Standard it will be a tough ask to walk away with a positive result.

But having beat them 2-0 in the Worcestershire FA Junior Cup earlier in the season, the Spa chief remains upbeat.

“Montpellier are a very good side so it will be an interesting game for sure,” he said.

“They will be looking to get one over on us having beaten them in the cup so it is going to be a big ask.

“All we can do is go out there and see what we can get.

“We may be near the bottom but I am not worried nor concerned about our league position.

“We have played a lot of the top sides in succession so we have got teams in and around us to come.”

After Saturday’s 7-0 thrashing of Evesham United’s under-21s in the Junior Cup on Saturday, a result which set up a semi-final clash at Feckenham, Spa bowed out of the Presidents Cup on Tuesday night at the hands of Northfield Town.

Having been locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes, Town prevailed 5-4 in the shoot-out after Jack Allerton was the only person to miss from 12 yards.

“Evesham turned up with an inexperienced side which did well to hold us at 1-0 at half-time,” said Oliver.

“But in the second half we just ran riot and probably could have won by more.

“And then the best team won on Tuesday and to be fair, Northfield should have wrapped the tie up in 90 minutes.

“There were no moans and groans from us as Northfield simply wanted it more than ourselves.”
