Joint-boss Oliver urges promotion-hunting Droitwich Spa to play with freedom in final game of the season

DROITWICH Spa joint-boss Wayne Oliver has urged his side to play with freedom as they look to try and secure promotion from Midland League Division Two this weekend.

In their final game of the season, the Saltmen only need to take a point from their home clash against third placed Alvis Sporting Club on Saturday to guarantee a top two spot.

Spa could have booked their place in Division One last Tuesday but they were held to a 2-2 draw by Paget Rangers at the Trevor Brown Memorial Ground.

Midfielder Max Crisp and forward Macauley Finch return to the side for the Alvis game and Oliver has urged his players to enjoy the occasion.

“We know exactly what we need to do to secure promotion which helps us out,” Oliver said.

“Me and Mark [Owen] have told the players to just gout out there, play with freedom and enjoy the game.

“It’s very tight at the top so it’s going to be a very interesting end to the season.”

Jack Allerton had given Spa the lead after 18 minutes at Paget on Tuesday but two goals in the space of three minutes before the break from Dan Carter fired the hosts ahead.

However, Spa came out a rejuvenated outfit after the break and their early pressure was rewarded when defender Matthew Hunt latched on to Jamie Smith’s free-kick to head home the equaliser.

“At half-time I told the players to just relax and play with freedom because it looked as though they got caught up in the whole situation and what the game meant,” Oliver added.

“The pressure of being top of the table as well as huge crowd certainly got to the players but we were generally pleased with the point.”
