Mixed fortunes for Droitwich Spa over Bank Holiday weekend

Droitwich Editorial 30th Aug, 2018   0

IT WAS a case of mixed fortunes for Droitwich Spa over the Bank Holiday weekend as they suffered their first West Midlands (Regional) League Division One defeat of the season before bouncing back to winning ways just two days later.

Last Saturday was a difficult afternoon for the Saltmen who were beaten 3-1 by early pacesetters Darlaston Town, despite going 1-0 up through a Curtis Townley penalty.

However, Spa quickly put that disappointment to bed on Bank Holiday Monday as they enjoyed a 2-0 victory over Old Wulfrunians in their first home game of the season at Stourport Swifts’ Walshes Meadow.

James Lemon and Ollie Thompson were on target for Spa who sit third after the opening four games of the season.

Joint-boss Wayne Oliver said: “We had two tough games over the weekend and the scoreline against Darlaston suggested the game was not as close as it actually was.

“We were not clinical enough and a few defensive mistakes let them in but we followed that up with a tough win against Old Wulfrunians.

“Our first-half performance was probably our best of the season so far but we took our foot off the gas a little after the break.

“All in all we are pleased with the start and we will see how we can push on.”

Spa now turn their attentions to the FA Vase first qualifying round when they welcome Midland League Premier Division outfit Coventry United to Walshes Meadow on Saturday.

United used to play against Spa when they were back in Division Two in the 2014/15 campaign before their successive promotions and Oliver sees the game as a chance to see how far the Saltmen have come since then.

“We’ve got nothing to fear,” he added. “It’s going to be a challenge for us but we’ll give it our best shot.”
