Oliver: Droitwich playing at Walsall would be massive

DROITWICH Spa joint-manager Wayne Oliver says getting the chance to play at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium would be a massive day in the club’s history.

The Saltmen take on Alvis Sporting Club in the semi-finals of the Les James Challenge Cup on Saturday (March 19) at the King George Playing Fields knowing victory would see them set foot on the turf at the home of League One side Walsall FC.

The last time the two sides met came back in August for a Midland League Division Two clash where Alvis claimed a narrow 3-2 victory over the Saltmen at the King George’s – the only defeat Spa have suffered at home all season.

And for Oliver, ahead of Saturday’s game, it’s a case of not getting too carried away with things.

“If we get the chance to play at Walsall it would be absolutely massive for the club,” he said.

“It’s just one of those days you hope will come around but I’m trying not to think about it too much at the moment.

“Alvis are a really good side and will probably win the league this year but I have told my players to go out there and give it their best shot.

“I will be disappointed if we do not put a shift in but one thing I have reinforced to my players is to not come away with any regrets, regardless of the outcome.”

The Saltmen go into Saturday’s all-important cup clash on the back of a 2-0 victory over Austrey Rangers thanks to goals from leading scorer James Lemon and Macaulay Finch.

The result lifted Spa back to the summit of the Division Two table, enhancing their chances of securing promotion.

“The first half I thought we were excellent,” Oliver added.

“We deserved to be in front but the second half wasn’t particularly great but we got the job done.

“Every league game for us now is a cup final and we have to win as many league games as we can and hope other teams around us slip up.

“However, we have to take it one game at a time and we are in high spirits for the cup game at Alvis.

“The players are in good shape and we will prepare them as best as we can but on the day, it will be down to them to put on a performance.”

Ahead of Saturday’s cup clash at Alvis, Oliver will be without the cup-tied James Ward but apart from that, he has a full squad to choose from.
