Oliver: Droitwich Spa cannot afford any more slip-ups in bid for top six finish

JOINT-BOSS Wayne Oliver has stressed Droitwich Spa will need to claim victory over Bloxwich Town this weekend to maintain their hopes of claiming a top-six finishing in Midland League Division Two this season.

Ninth-placed Spa welcome the Black Country side to Walshes Meadow, the home of Stourport Swifts, on Saturday looking to claim just their second league win at their new home.

Home form has certainly been a problem for the Saltmen, with their only league win by the River Severn coming at the end of 2017 in a 2-1 success over Moors Academy on December 23.

And Oliver’s New Year’s resolution is to not lose at home in the league in 2018.

“If we have any aspirations to finish in the top six then we cannot afford to drop any more points, especially at home,” he said.

“It is the same old cliche but we need to take each games it comes.

“We need to try and win as many games as possible to obtain a top-six finish at the end of the season.”

Spa head into the clash on the back of Saturday’s 7-6 penalty shoot-out defeat to Smithswood Firs in the quarter-finals of the Les James Challenge Cup after the two sides were locked at 0-0 after 90 minutes.

It was the third cup competition the Saltmen have been knocked out of on penalties this season, losing to Northfield Town and AFC Wulfrunians in the Presidents Cup and Poylmac Packaging League Cup respectively.

“Penalties is always a lottery but prior to then we had put on a strong performance against Smithswood and had chances to win it,” said Oliver.

“I think a draw after 90 minutes was a fair result and if we can repeat that at their place in the league later in the season I will be very happy.”
