Oliver: Droitwich Spa have 11 cup finals left

DROITWICH Spa joint-boss Wayne Oliver says the Saltmen have got 11 cup finals left as they bid for promotion from Midland League Division Two.

Second placed Spa made it four wins on the bounce in the league on Saturday but they had to do it the hard way as they let a two-goal lead slip before eventually running out 4-2 winners at basement club Continental Star.

Nick Seabourne claimed his 19th goal of the campaign to put the visitors ahead before Bradley Burgess doubled the advantage going into the interval.

After the break, Star came out the blocks quickest and got themselves back into the game when Lemaar Rhule slotted home from the penalty spot following an adjudged handball in the area by Spa skipper Mike Seeley.

And five minutes later the hosts were level as a wonderful cross by Helal Albaarini was tapped home by Pedro Douglas.

But the equaliser seemed to have woke Spa up as Jamie Smith’s deflected free-kick gave the Saltmen a 3-2 lead before Max Crisp completed the scoring towards the end of the game.

Oliver said: “The scoreline suggests the game was much closer than it actually was.

“When we was 2-0 up we had some decisions which went against us but in the end we was glad to walk away with the three points.

“We have got 11 cup finals left and we just have to keep winning to ensure sides around us can’t catch us.

“Each result is going to be as important as the last.”

Spa will look for their fifth straight league win on Saturday when they travel to Bloxwich Town who have already beaten the Saltmen twice this season.

The Black Country-based side recorded a 2-1 victory over Spa in the Les James Challenge Cup in August before securing a 1-0 win in the league at the King George Playing Fields in September.

“We know what to expect when we visit Bloxwich this weekend,” Oliver said.

“It’s not the prettiest places in the world to visit so it’s going to be a tough game but we have got to be in the right frame of mind to get the victory.”

Oliver is still without striker James Lemon (quadriceps) while fellow forward Aston Gunter (knee) faces a late fitness test.
