Oliver: Droitwich Spa's trip to table-toppers NKF Burbage a step into the unknown

JOINT-BOSS Wayne Oliver admits Droitwich Spa will be heading into the unknown when the Saltmen make the trip to NKF Burbage this weekend.

Having cruised to the Midland League Division Three title last time, newly-promoted Burbage have enjoyed a flying start to their debut Division Two campaign.

Burbage top the table after 12 games following their 2-0 win at Montpellier on Saturday.

The Leicestershire side play their football at the Kirkby Road Sports Ground, the home of Northern Premier League outfit Barwell, and Oliver told the Standard tomorrow’s (Saturday) fixture is a venture into the dark.

“We do not really know much about them and the kind of pitch they play on so it will be an interesting game,” he said.

“It’s a massive game for us. Our away form is really good and we go over there with a squad which is slowly getting back to normal fitness-wise and players coming back from injury.

“We have just got to give it our best shot and see what happens.”

The Saltmen head into the game on the back of last Saturday’s 4-3 home defeat to high-flying Smithswood Firs, a defeat which leaves Oliver’s men without a league win at their new Walshes Meadow home.

James Lemon opened the scoring for Spa before Chris Lloyd hammered home a 25-yard free-kick to level just four minutes later.

Martin Crawford then nosed the visitors ahead but back came Spa as Lemon bagged his second of the game to make it 2-2 after 36 minutes.

Lloyd powered in another free-kick, this time from the edge of the area, to put Firs back in front two minutes after the interval before Trea Bertie made it 4-2 with 13 minutes remaining.

However, two minutes later Nick Seabourne poked home to set up a tense finish but the visitors managed to hold out to claim the victory.

“It was a great game for the neutral,” said Oliver.

“But we created more than enough chances to win the game.

“We made some uncharacteristic errors which cost us dearly.”
