Oliver: It's important Droitwich Spa keep picking up the points

DROITWICH Spa joint-boss Wayne Oliver says its important his side keep picking up points to maintain a promotion push.

The Saltmen made it back-to-back Midland League Division Two wins on Saturday as James Lemon’s brace secured a 2-0 victory at rivals Barnt Green Spartak.

Lemon had given the visitors the lead on the stroke of half-time when a wonderful counter-attack saw him round Spartak keeper Raghban Ali before slotting home.

Spa’s leading goalscorer for last season then doubled his side’s lead after 57 minutes when he controlled Nick Seabourne’s cross with his chest in the box before slotting home from close range.

The three points moved Spa up to second place in the table and with a return to the King George Playing Fields tomorrow (Saturday) against mid-table Sutton United, Oliver is hoping for a hat-trick of wins.

He said: “After the county cup game at Welland I said to the players we should treat our next three games as a mini league and try to win them all.

“I wanted nine points before our county cup semi-final against Worcester Raiders next week and so far we have six so we will be looking to win again on Saturday.

“I thought the game at Barnt Green was a pretty even contest but Matt Oliver made a good stop to keep the score at 0-0 and give us something to work from.

“We took our chances and we defended well for the 90 minutes to pick up a good three points.”

Lemon (away) will miss the game against United as well as Kieran Whitehead, Mike Seeley (ankle) and James Halsall (knee).

But with several key players missing and his squad yet to hit top form, Oliver told the Standard it’s results what matter most and not performances.

“At the moment we are not playing well but we are still up the top end so we can’t have too many complaints,” he added.

“We want to keep winning but there’s a lot of football to play from now until the end of the season.”
