Oliver: No complaints with Droitwich Spa's flying start in new league

Droitwich Editorial 4th Oct, 2018   0

JOINT-BOSS Wayne Oliver has been left over the moon with how Droitwich Spa are settling into their new league.

Having switched to West Midlands One from Midlands Two in the summer as part of an FA reshuffle of the non-league pyramid, the Saltmen currently sit second in the table with 22 points from a possible 27.

Their only dropped points of the season came in a 3-1 defeat at Darlaston Town and a 1-1 home draw to league leaders Team Dudley.

Although Oliver and fellow joint-boss Mark Owen won’t officially sit down until after Saturday’s away trip to Wellington Amateurs to officially assess their start, Oliver told the Standard there aren’t really any complaints.

“If someone had said to us we’d have only dropped five points after nine games I would have snapped their hands off,” said Oliver.

“Myself and Mark will sit down on Sunday to assess the start we have had but looking at it right now we are over the moon.

“After Saturday our focus will be games 11 to 20 and then we will assess things again to see what potential is there.

“Then from games 21 to 30, depending on our position in the league, we can see what we can do to push on.”

It has been a positive week for Spa who booked their place in the next round of the Worcestershire Junior Cup last Saturday with a 4-0 home win over Hanley Swan before following that up with a 6-0 away win at Bromyard in the league on Tuesday night.

James Lemon (2), Dan Cottrill and Cory Rudd netted in the win over Hanley, while Lemon (3), Matt Hunt (2) and Cottrill were on the scoresheet in the victory over Bromyard.

“Saturday was a worthy exercise for us as it gave us the chance to give starts to those who have not had much game time,” said Oliver.

“Being critical we should have won by a bigger margin but the lads which came in did well from the very first whistle.

“Then on Tuesday once we went ahead we were quite poor up to half-time.

“After the break we started slowly but once we got the second we played some decent stuff and took our chances.”

Droitwich Spa U21 prospect Lucas Edmonds was drafted into the squad on Tuesday and came on as a second-half substitute, with his performance pleasing Oliver.

“We were a little short of strikers for the Bromyard game but I thought he did really well when he came on,” he added.

“When myself and Mark took over five years ago we brought in the youngsters like Macauley Finch, James Lemon, Haydn Morris and Brad Burgess who have now matured and become the experienced players in the group.

“Being able to give youngsters like Lucas a chance shows where are looking for the next crop of talented youngsters in Droitwich.

“It’s all about progression and the links we have with the U21s is fantastic.”
