SKIPPER James Shewell insists Droitwich have the prime opportunity to create a healthy lead at the top of Midlands Three West (South) this weekend.
Following a week off, table-toppers Droitwich travel to fellow promotion rivals Ledbury on Saturday knowing victory could go a very long way to securing an immediate return to Midlands Two West (South).
Shewell and the rest of his team-mates will be hoping to make it 15 wins out 15 after they maintained their 100 per cent record with a 37-3 victory over rivals Evesham a fortnight ago at the Glyn Mitchell Memorial Ground.
The Droitwich captain said: “Saturday is a big game but they’re the ones we enjoy the most.
“It’s a similar situation to the Evesham game in that the pressure is on them [Ledbury].
“They have to win to keep their own automatic promotion ambitions.
“Evesham looked and seemed to be nervous with the pressure whereas I felt our lads thrived on it and it contrived to produce what was probably our best performance of the season.”
Despite having a week off Shewell says it has been rather easy to focus on the task at hand.
He added there would be no promotion celebrations until it is ‘mathematically possible’ but insisted victory would give them the upper hand in the final stages of the season.
“We presented the lads a simple question, do we want a six point lead or a 16 point lead?” he said.
“We know what we can do and we are confident of producing another big game performance.
“We’re not counting any chickens before they hatch and will not be celebrating any promotion until it is mathematically certain.
“However it’s an opportunity to create a healthy lead and really give us some breathing space.”
The last time the two sides met, Droitwich ran out comfortable 43-18 winners.
Kick-off is at 2.15pm.
