DROITWICH captain James Shewell says it’s time to ‘stamp some authority’ over Midlands 3 West (South) title rivals Evesham this weekend.
Shewell and the rest of his team-mates are enjoying a golden spell following their relegation from Midlands 2 West (South) last season as they stretched their 100 per cent winning record to 12 games with the 45-0 defeat of second-from-bottom Woodrush on Saturday.
The victory maintained Droitwich’s 11 point gap over second placed Ledbury and with a huge clash against third placed Evesham this Saturday, Shewell told the Standard theĀ game could be a huge psychological battle.
“If we can get through this weekend and then beat Ledbury the week after we will have a big gap over our title rivals,” he said.
“We have got a good squad with lots of players fighting for places which I thought may have been a problem but it hasn’t.
“Last week was a prime opportunity to give some fringe players some game time and they did really well.
“But this week is time to stamp some authority on Evesham and it will be a psychological battle prior to our cup clash later in the season.
“Evesham are a good side and they have not lost a game since October so they are full of confidence right now.
“But we know how good of a squad we have so if we have to dig out a result then we will.”
Droitwich then travel to Evesham on Saturday, March 18 for the RFU Midlands Senior Vase final knowing they are two games away from an outing at Twickenham.
But Shewell insisted it is important he and the rest of the players do not get distracted as they bid for promotion back to Midlands 2 West (South).
“We have to take each game as it comes,” he added.
“It’s great we are two games away from Twickenham but my worry is complacency.
“We don’t want the cup competitions to be a distraction for us so it’s important to not look too far ahead.
“As much as the Senior Vase game is in our minds, we have to focus on the league for now.”
