Shewell: Twickenham memories firing Droitwich up for cup test against Walsall

Droitwich Editorial 5th Oct, 2017   0

DROITWICH skipper James Shewell hopes this weekend’s RFU Midlands Intermediate Cup tie against Walsall will be the start of another exciting journey to Twickenham.

The Glyn Mitchell Memorial Ground side graced the home of rugby last season where they were unfortunately beaten 37-15 by London side Farnham in the RFU Senior Vase final.

But three wins out of three in Midlands Two West (South) with since their promotion last term, Shewell says Droitwich go into Saturday’s home tie against Midlands Two West (North) side Walsall their trade in in confident mood.

“Usually cup ties are a nice distraction from the league but after what we achieved last season we want to experience it all again,” he said.

“If results go our way throughout the competition we will be back at Twickenham so hopefully this weekend will be the start of another exciting journey for the club.

“Walsall are traditionally the bigger side but now play at the same level as us, albeit in a different section.

“But given the fact we are at home I am confident we have the ability to book our place in the next round.”

Droitwich go into their cup clash on the back of a low-scoring 15-7 home victory over Barkers Butts, the club’s 25th consecutive league win.

The hosts came from 7-0 down to secure the win, thanks to tries from Matt Barnes and Sam O’Brien. Bobby Scott-Walker also kicked a conversion and a penalty.

“It was a different test for us,” Shewell admitted. “Usually we start strong at home but some ill-discipline cost us early doors.

“But after that we kept Barkers Butts at bay for 60 minutes which was very pleasing.

“The conditions were not great but it is the first time our defence has been tested and we showed great character to turn the game around.”
